15 x 22 inches | Mixed Media Abstract Painting on Paper | Framed in a Floating Frame
Acrylics, collage, mark making
“I Had to Go There” is a deeply emotional, intuitive painting that unfolded through layers of collage, acrylic splashes, and free mark-making. I usually avoid dark colors, but for this one, I let them in—browns, black, and moody textures—because I knew I had to face what I usually turn away from.
I played with acrylics the way I love to—freely, instinctively, without overthinking—and softened the heaviness with white, not to cover it, but to create space for it all to exist together. There’s a butterfly rising from the white space, a symbol of freedom, showing up only after I allowed the dark to be seen.
The painting is framed in a clean, floating frame with a 1-inch gap revealing the white matte board beneath. The artwork itself is slightly raised, giving it dimension and a sense of breath. The frame is sleek, half an inch wide, and subtle—just enough to hold the piece without containing it too much.
This painting is about that inner journey—accepting the shadow, letting it move through, and finding beauty on the other side.
