15 x 18 inches | Mixed Media on Paper | Framed in a Floating Frame
Acrylics, collage, fabrics
“Roots and Remnants” is a deeply layered, intuitive mixed-media painting created on handmade paper, using fabric, plaster gauze, and acrylics to build a rugged, tactile surface. The textures were first covered in deep blacks and earthy browns, just letting myself feel it all. There was something really powerful about letting the darkness take up space.
The painting was inspired by a quote from Leonardo da Vinci:
“A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.”
This line struck something in me. I began in darkness, painting layer upon layer, shifting slowly from deep earth tones to soft lights, revealing textures and fragments as I moved upward. The black drips I added at the end felt like remnants of roots—shadow memories that shaped me, that still live in me, even as I grow toward the light.
The finished piece resembles an abstract landscape—some see tree roots, earth layers, or even a forest ground. Others see something entirely different. I believe art meets each person where they are, so I invite you to find your own meaning in this piece.
